Accused of witchcraft and incestuous rape, Robert Wentworth sends Faythe and her beau Tommy Carlin to Briarcliff for the help of lawyer Jens Pickering, who is entranced by Faythe. Nununyi, now common-law wife to an old soldier friend of Sheriff Jones, secretly befriends Katakuk’s son Tamawah. The trial begins, but Pat Downing comes close to confessing and must be stopped. (A new story element is introduced in the form of Julie Handsome, a prostitute who learns of the bribes and must be silenced.)
